Sunscreen Myths

When it comes to sun protection, there is a lot of misinformation. Epionce founder and CEO, Dr. Carl Thornfeldt, addresses some common myths to be aware of.

Does a base tan protect skin from damage in the summer?

No! The best way to prevent sunburn is by applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure – and reapply every 2 hours. Given that most people leave out sunscreen in order to achieve a base tan, they are more susceptible to skin damage caused by exposure to UV rays. There is no such thing as a safe tan – base tan included.

Do all skin tones need sunscreen?

Yes! A broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential for all skin types and tones. While it’s true that individuals with darker skin tones produce more pigment (melanin), which helps protect the skin, without a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher UVA and UVB radiation puts individuals at risk for certain types of skin cancer. Take precautions by making a habit of applying sunscreen and wear UPF clothing or wide-brimmed hats when outdoors.
