October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a worldwide campaign that occurs every October. The purpose is to educate others about breast cancer and promote life-saving research to combat this condition. Thousands of charities and organizations come together to spread breast cancer awareness and show their support by holding fundraisers, hosting events, and connecting with their local communities.

Preventative Measures

Family history can indicate if you are at a higher risk of breast cancer than others, However, there are some things you can do on a daily basis to lower your chances. According to Mayo Clinic, the following lifestyle changes may reduce your risk of developing breast cancer:

  • Limiting alcohol consumption: There may be a link between alcohol and breast cancer, so drinking in moderation or not drinking at all is highly recommended.
  • Quitting the use of tobacco: Tobacco is a carcinogenic substance. Using it in any form (smoking and chewing) can increase your chance of various illnesses, including breast cancer. Kick the habit as soon as possible to reap the maximum health benefits.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight: Overweight or obese women are more likely to experience breast cancer than those at a steady, average weight. Staying active and eating a balanced diet can help you achieve and maintain a healthy size.
  • Incorporating physical activity: Some individuals are naturally thin, but they do not get enough exercise. Leading an active lifestyle by including at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity in your week can help prevent cancer and boost your overall wellness.

Some ways to detect breast cancer early on is with regular self-exams and mammograms. Be mindful of any breast changes you notice. Lumps, rashes, skin discoloration, and nipple discharge are all reasons to go to your doctor for a breast exam.
